So my trans is about 90% installed, im just having a few lingering usses with the godawful pressure fittings om the cooler lines. While underneath the car, I notice that my front shock mounts on the lower control arm look terrible . its really strange as the control arms themselves aren’t that bad, nor is the rest of the underbody. I am not finding replacements for the little bolt in metal piece, they must come with a new set of shocks.

On a scale of volvo to pinto, how unsafe is this?

Also, underbody pics

As someone who just had to cut off the bolts holding his front shocks on to his Camaro let me just say that the parts are available to fix that and they’re pretty cheap. The threads that the bolts go in to are just clips so all you have to do is cut the old bolts, pry the old clips off and replace them. They’re probably ok as is but you’ll have to do it eventually if you ever want to replace the shocks, ball joints, springs, etc.

I’d give that a Vega on the safety scale, not great but not kill a bus load of Nuns dangerous.

Shocks are technically not needed. You’ll be fine.

You’re fine, n ew shocks come with the little cross bar bit . Normally t o remove the old shocks, easiest way to get that top bolt is hit it with an impact and unscrew the shock internally, it’ll drop right out and you can pull the top half of the shock out the top of the A arms. For you, a grinder with a cut off wheel will be your best friend though .

I just did all four shocks on my car if you have any process questions.

Gonna try to make these last a little while longer since they still work. While i got you though, what kind of shocks did you buy?

They had a “buy four shocks get $40 off” for these KYB when I bought them. They’re not bad.

Ehhhhh could be worse. They’re rusty but it look like more of a “fused together” than a “disintegrating” sort of state. The good news is that when you go to replace them, the cross bar come as part of the new shock, the bolts are cheap, and they thread into also-cheap clip nuts so you can just break (or cut) them to get it apart.
